| One of the objectives of St. Charles Borromeo School is to promote the physical well-being and fitness of its students to provide a safe and healthy school environment. |
| All students enrolled in St. Charles Borromeo School must have a physical examination report on file in the school office and a record card of immunizations for polio, measles, DPT, hepatitis B, mumps, and rubella*. Enrollment is not valid unless both of these are filed. (* From time to time it becomes necessary to add health/immunization requirements as required by the state. Parents/guardians will be notified of these changes in a timely manner.) |
 |
| CHILD ABUSE REPORTING
In accordance with diocesan policy and California State law, school faculty and staff are obligated under penalty of law to report the reasonable suspicion of any physical or emotional abuse. This would include emotional deprivation, physical neglect, inadequate supervision, or sexual abuse or exploitation. In this very serious and legally narrow area, the school will not contact parents/guardians in advance of making a report to legal authorities. The clear intent of the law, based on the seriousness of the crimes listed above, is to mandate that a report of reasonable suspicion of abuse be made. School faculty and staff will make such reports in the best interest of the child and do not, once reasonable suspicion is established, have any legal alternative except to make the report to the proper authorities for their investigation and review. |
 |
| HEALTH EDUCATION
Health education is provided through classroom instruction and special programs designed to meet the needs of the developmental stages of the students. |
 |
| HEALTH SCREENING TESTS
Students at St. Charles Borromeo School participate in the following screening tests during the year:
Hearing, vision, scoliosis, scalp/hair checks (when necessary) |
 |
ILLNESS AND INJURY
Parents/guardians will be contacted immediately for information and instructions in the event of injury. If the parents/guardians are not available, the Emergency Form shall be consulted.
If no responsible person can be reached, and the illness or injury is believed to be serious enough to require medical attention, the person in charge will arrange for the student to receive immediate treatment from a doctor, hospital, or emergency care personnel. |
 |
MEDICATION
When it is necessary for a student to take medication during school hours, these state directives must be followed: There must be a written statement from a physician detailing the method, amount, and schedules by which such medication is to be taken.
There must be a written statement from the parent/guardian indicating the desire that the school assist the pupil in the matters set forth in the physician's statement.
All medication must be left in the school office. Students are not allowed to have ANY medication (this includes aspirin and inhalers) on their person or in their desk, backpacks etc. Students are sometimes tempted to share medications without the knowledge or consent of authorized adults. Any medication may have an adverse effect, and in these cases it is extremely important to know precisely the type of medication ingested for proper and immediate treatment. |
